Types of Pallet Racking: A Simple Guide to Choosing the Right Storage Solution

Pallet racking solutions offer excellent storage efficiency for warehouses.

How to Choose the Right Type Of Pallet Racking Storage Solution?

Pallet racking is one of the most common ways to store palletized goods in a warehouse or industrial space. In simple terms, it’s a steel storage system where pallets are stored on horizontal beams that are supported by upright frames. Forklifts place and retrieve the pallets, which helps you use your vertical space more efficiently instead of relying only on floor storage.

You’ll find pallet racking in places like warehouses, distribution centres, manufacturing facilities, cold storage, and back-of-house retail — anywhere pallets need to be stored safely and organized.

If you’re new to pallet racking, the terminology and different system types can feel confusing at first. There isn’t just one “standard” rack — there are several different pallet racking systems, each designed for different kinds of products, space constraints, and workflows.

In this guide, we’ll break down the most common types of pallet racking in plain language, with examples of where each system works best. The goal is simply to help you understand your options so you can have more informed conversations when planning or upgrading your storage

A quick look at the basics

Before we get into the different racking systems, it helps to understand a few core concepts. A pallet racking system is built from upright frames and horizontal beams. Pallets sit on those beams, and forklifts are used to place and retrieve the loads.

There are a few key factors that influence which type of racking system will work best in your space:

  • Aisle width — wider aisles mean easier forklift access but lower storage density; narrower aisles increase storage but may require specialized equipment.

  • Storage density — how many pallets you want to store within your available footprint.

  • Access or picking style — whether you need direct access to every pallet, or if storing pallets in deeper lanes is acceptable.

  • Inventory rotation (FIFO vs LIFO) — whether your operation requires the oldest stock to ship first (FIFO), or if last-in, first-out (LIFO) is acceptable.

You don’t need to be an expert in these terms yet — we’ll connect them back to each racking system as we go. The main idea is that there’s no one “best” pallet racking system — just the best fit for how your operation runs.

1. Standard Pallet Racking (Most Common System)

What it is: The most widely used racking system — simple upright frames with horizontal beams where pallets are stored.

Best for: Operations that need easy access to every pallet. Great for small to medium warehouses with diverse SKUs.

How it works: Each pallet has its own location; forklifts place and retrieve pallets directly.

Pros:

  • Direct access to every pallet

  • Flexible layout

  • Easy to add or remove sections

Limitations:

  • Lower storage density compared to high-density systems

2. Drive-In / Drive-Through Racking (High-Density Storage)

What it is: A dense storage system where forklifts drive into the racks to load and pick pallets.

Best for: Large volumes of the same product or SKU. Ideal for cold storage or bulk inventory.

How it works: Pallets are stored on rails inside the rack; forklifts enter the aisle to access them.

  • Drive-In: LIFO system

  • Drive-Through: FIFO system

Pros: Maximizes storage density, cost-efficient for large, uniform inventory.
Limitations:

  • Forklift traffic can be tricky

  • Less flexibility for multiple SKUs

3. Push-Back Racking

What it is: Pallets sit on nested carts that move along rails; each new pallet pushes the ones behind it back.

Best for: Medium-density storage with moderate SKU variety.

How it works: LIFO system — last pallet loaded is first picked. Faster access than drive-in.

Pros:

  • Higher density than standard racking

  • Easy to use with standard forklifts

Limitations:

  • LIFO system may not be suitable if strict FIFO is required
  • Limited limited SKU variety per lane (same SKU)

4.Pallet Flow (Gravity Flow Racking)

What it is: A high-density, FIFO system where pallets roll along inclined roller tracks from loading to picking side.

Best for: Expiry-date products or operations requiring strict first-in, first-out inventory.

Pros:

  • True FIFO

  • Fast picking

  • Minimum Forklift Operation is required for even dense storage area.

Limitations:

  • Requires good quality pallets, poor quality pallets can lead to jams or uncontrolled flow.

  • Not all products or pallet types are suitable for gravity-fed systems.

5.Cantilever Racking (For Long & Bulky Items)

What it is: A column-free rack where pallets or products rest on horizontal arms.

Best for: Long, bulky items like lumber, pipes, steel, or furniture.

Pros:

  • Easy loading of long items

  • Flexible for irregular shapes

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for standard pallet loads

  • Requires floor space for arms

6.Very Narrow Aisle (VNA) Racking

What it is: Similar to standard racking, but aisles are much narrower to maximize storage.

Best for: Operations with limited floor space that want to store more pallets vertically.

How it works: Requires specialized forklifts (turret or aisle trucks) to pick/load pallets.

Pros:

  • High storage density

  • Efficient use of vertical space

Limitations:

  • Requires specialized forklifts

  • Limited flexibility compared to standard aisles

7.Mobile Racking (High-Density)

What it is: Racking is mounted on powered carriages that move on tracks, opening only the aisle you need.

Best for: maximizing storage density in space-constrained environments like warehouses, cold storage, and archives, especially for items with low to medium access frequency.

Pros:

  • Maximizes storage in limited floor space

  • Reduces number of permanent aisles

Limitations:

  • Higher upfront cost

  • Installation Complexity: Requires precise design, professional installation, and potentially floor reinforcement.
